In 2004, there were 774 individuals killed on Oklahoma highways and roads. Of this number, 36% of these were directly related to driving while drinking. 315 fatalities were related to excessive speed and 114 involved collisions with large trucks. (See the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (“NHTSA”) website for more statistics related to Oklahoma traffic-related injuries and deaths.)

If you drive or travel on Oklahoma roads, the chances are that you will be involved in at least one automobile accident. Always protect yourself by observing the rules of the road, purchasing adequate auto insurance that includes uninsured and underinsured motorists coverage, and by driving defensively. ALWAYS WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT.

Remember that you purchase liability insurance because it is Oklahoma law in case you injure someone or cause damage to someone’s property. You should additionally always carry uninsured and underinsured motorist insurance coverage to protect yourself in the event you are involved in an accident, it is someone else’s fault, and that individual either is uninsured or does not carry enough insurance to completely cover your claim.

If you have been involved in a motor vehicle accident you may be entitled to compensation from the negligent party's insurance company and/or your own insurance company if the negligent driver was uninsured or underinsured. That is where we can help. You should never proceed with a negligence claim without first obtaining legal advice. Because of our experience and our knowledge of the court system, we can frequently reduce insurance company red tape and ensure you are justly compensated for all current and future damages.

Promptly notifying an attorney is important. It is a fact that within the first week after an accident, important physical evidence can be lost and witnesses can often become harder to locate. Also, the passing of time makes it more difficult to remember important details of the accident.

CRITICAL THINGS YOU SHOULD DO AFTER AN ACCIDENT

1. Insist that a report be filed with the police, sheriff or highway patrol.

2. Obtain the name, address, insurance information, vehicle license number and driver's license number of any and all other persons involved in the accident.

3. Get the names, addresses and telephone numbers of all witnesses.

4. If possible, photograph the accident scene, including all vehicles involved (before repairing) and any visible injuries (cuts, bruises) you or your passengers have.

5. Talk to no one about the accident or injuries other than your doctor or lawyer, especially not an insurance adjuster.

6. Sign nothing without consulting a lawyer. Likewise, do not give a recorded statement without first speaking with an attorney. Truthful statements made in an attempt to be helpful can easily be misinterpreted and turned against you.

7. Seek medical attention and tell your physician or surgeon exactly how the injury occurred and describe all symptoms and complaints. Continue to see your health care provider until you are released.

8. Be sure to report memory problems, confusion or disorientation, however minor these things may seem at the time.

9. Immediately call an experienced and reputable personal injury law firm for a consultation. Call us now at 1- 866-859-7500 (national toll free accident line) or 405-604-7500 (Oklahoma City).

We are here to serve you by offering free consultations and prompt, courteous service.
